Title: THE WEAKNESS OF A “SHELTERED” LIFE
Text: 1 Thessalonians 3:3 KJV
“That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.”
God’s goal for your life is to make you STRONG and HOLY, not just comfortable and happy. A sheltered life doesn’t protect you—a sheltered life makes you WEAK!
INTRODUCTION
My beloved brethren, we live in a culture today that is absolutely obsessed with safety, comfort, and protection. We wrap everything in bubble wrap. We put padding on every sharp corner.
And as parents, it is natural to want to protect our children. But there is a dangerous trend in our modern world: parents who bend over backward to make their children happy every single second of the day are actually setting them up for massive disappointment in the future. Parents who seek to shelter their children from every risk, disappointment, and bit of sadness are giving those kids a false view of what it means to live in a hostile world. They fail to prepare them for the harsh, unvarnished realities of adult life!
And here is the tragedy, brethren: some Christians expect Almighty God to be that kind of parent! They come to the altar expecting God to act like an overly permissive, helicopter parent whose sole job in the universe is to shelter them from all sorrow, inconvenience, and hardship. They think the moment they say ‘yes’ to Jesus, God places an invisible glass bubble over their lives where no storm can ever touch them.
But God is not that kind of Father! Look at the Father in the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke chapter 15. When that young man wanted to go his own way, the Father didn’t chain him to the bedpost. He allowed his son to make mistakes. He allowed him to face the painful consequences of his choices. Why? So that in the mud of the pigpen, that young man would finally come to himself and learn what really mattered.
Children brought up with the foolish idea that ‘the easy life is the happy life’ are in for a severe reality check! Because life ain’t easy—and praise God, it is the struggle that makes us strong!
I. A FALSE VIEW OF LIFE
1 Thessalonians 3:3; James 1:2-4
A sheltered life is dangerous because it teaches us fundamental lies about how the world works, how faith works, and how God works.
A. A False View of the World
Notice what Paul tells the believers in Thessalonica. He says in verse 3: “That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.” Listen to that word: APPOINTED. Paul didn’t tell them, ‘I’m so sorry you’re going through a rough patch, I’ll pray God removes all your problems.’ He said, ‘Did you forget? You have a divine appointment with difficulty!’
Parents who shelter their kids from every conflict give them a delusional view of a fallen world. Church, the Bible never promised us that the Christian life would be a resort playground. The Bible promised us a battlefield! Jesus said in John 16:33, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” He didn’t say IF tribulation comes; He said WHEN it comes!
God never promised a life without trouble. His promise is that He will walk through the fire right beside us! When you shelter a believer from every trial, the second trouble comes, they throw up their hands and say, ‘Where was God?!’ God was right where He always was—fulfilling His appointment to refine your faith!
B. A False View of God
When you live a sheltered life, you begin to project a false character onto God.
A permissive parent lets the child eat candy for dinner because ‘it makes them happy.’ A permissive parent never lets the child experience discipline. But Hebrews 12:6 says, “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”
Look again at the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:16-17. The Bible says “he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said… I will arise and go to my father.” Do you see that? God permitted the famine! God permitted the pigpen! If God had stepped in and showered the prodigal with money in the far country, the boy would have died in his sin! God let him smell the pigs so he would remember the Father’s house!
If all you’ve ever known is comfort, you will fall apart the moment conflict comes! A false view of life sets you up to be ‘moved’ when the heat gets turned up!
II. A FAULTY PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
Proverbs 22:6; Matthew 7:13-14; James 1:2-4
Not only does a sheltered life give us a false view of reality, but it also causes us to chase the wrong target.
A. Chasing “Easy” Instead of Godly
Our modern world tells us: ‘If it hurts, avoid it. If it’s hard, quit. If it takes effort, it’s not worth it.’
The Lie: “Easy = Happy” — Culture preaches that a smooth road is a blessed road. But Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction… Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” The broad, easy road leads to death!
The Truth: “Difficult = Strong” — Nothing of real value in this life is produced without friction. You don’t get physical endurance by lying on a recliner; you get it by straining your muscles! When we face the truth that life is difficult, we stop complaining about the steep hills and start lacing up our boots! We stop chasing an easy life and start investing in a godly life. A godly life builds spiritual armor that protects you when the fiery darts start flying!
B. Chasing Comfort Instead of Character
Parents, we must consider this carefully: Proverbs 22:6 tells us, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Notice it says “train,” not “pamper”!
Sheltering Now Creates Struggle Later: If you remove every obstacle from your children’s path today, you are sending them into adulthood without any legs to stand on! Our trials build our spiritual muscles.
God’s Goal is Holiness, Not Just Happiness. God never says, “Be ye happy for I am happy.” Read James 1:2-4 with me: “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” God doesn’t allow trials to destroy you; He allows trials to complete you! Happiness depends on happening—it changes with the weather! But holiness and character are anchored to the Rock of Ages!
Stop praying for an easy life! Start praying for a strong faith! God builds holy character amid divers temptations, never in the comfort of compromise!
III. A FUTURE OF FRAGILITY
Hebrews 12:5-11; 1 Peter 4:12-13; Daniel 3:25
If you shield yourself from every trial today, you are guaranteeing spiritual fragility tomorrow.
A. Fragile Because We’re Unprepared
Think about a child learning to walk. What happens? They take two steps, fall down, and bump their knee. If a mother rushes in and carries that child until they are fifteen years old so they never fall again, that teenager will never learn to walk!
No Resistance = No Resilience: A Christian who is never tested doesn’t know how to trust God!
The Danger of Being “Moved”: Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 3:3, “That no man should be moved by these afflictions.” That word moved in the original Greek carries the idea of a dog wagging its tail, or something being shaken violently back and forth until it collapses. Why do so many church members backslide the moment a crisis hits? Because they were sheltered! They were never trained to stand firm in the gale-force winds of life!
B. Fragile Because We Missed God’s Purpose
God does not permit trouble in your life because He has forgotten you. He permits it to train you!
Exercised by Affliction: Look at Hebrews 12:11: “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” Did you catch that phrase? “Exercised thereby!” Affliction is God’s spiritual gymnasium!
God Wants Warriors, Not Spoiled Children: God could have kept Daniel out of the lions’ den, couldn’t He? But He let him get thrown in so He could shut the lions’ mouths! God could have kept the Three Hebrew Boys out of Nebuchadnezzar’s fiery furnace! But He allowed them to be cast in so that the Son of God could walk with them in the middle of the fire (Daniel 3:25)! Peter writes in 1 Peter 4:12-13, “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you… But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings…”
God loves you far too much to leave you weak, fragile, and spoiled! He will allow the storms of life to beat against your house so you learn how to anchor your soul to the Solid Rock!
CONCLUSION:
A. Hear the Word of God Today: A sheltered life leaves you spiritually fragile, chasing comfort over character, and unprepared for trials. God is not trying to make you comfortable—God is trying to make you Christ-like!
B. To the Parents and Grandparents: Stop trying to shelter your children from every struggle. Stop fixing every mistake for them. Stop preparing the path for your child, and start preparing your child for the path! Train them up in the Lord so that when the real world hits them, they stand like a tree rooted in the Word of God.
C. To Christians Going Through a Storm: Stop asking, “Why me, Lord? Why did You let this happen to me?” Start asking, “Lord, what are You building in me? What are You burning out of me? How are You making me holy through this pain?”
