Title: WHO YOU WALK WITH DETERMINES WHERE YOU WALK
TEXT: Proverbs 13:20 KJV
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
INTRODUCTION
Life is defined by relationships. You do not journey through this world in a vacuum; the company you keep will inevitably dictate the conduct you display.
Psalm 106:35 — “But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.”
Proverbs 22:24–25 — “Make no friendship with an angry man… Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.”
1 Corinthians 15:33 — “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”
The friends you choose matter. The places you go matter. Your co-workers and classmates matter. Relationships with the wrong people will spiritually, emotionally, and morally destroy you! That is why godly separation is vital for holy living.
2 Corinthians 6:17 — “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord.”
Your phone is proof of this. Scroll your WhatsApp, TikTok FYP, Instagram feed. The algorithm feeds you what your friends watch. Walk with the world, the world will walk into your heart.
I. PRINCIPLED COMPANIONS — God Walks With You Through Wise People
Proverbs 13:20a — “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise…”
When God wants to bless your life, mature your faith, or protect your divine destiny, He doesn’t just send an event—He sends a person. Godly influence rubs off on us through consistent fellowship.
A. The PRINCIPLE — The Premise
God’s divine provision and spiritual growth almost always walk into your life wearing shoes. God could drop money from heaven, but He sends a Boaz. He could speak audibly, but He sends a Barnabas. Heaven’s help has a human face.
Wisdom spreads from person to person. Spending time with godly individuals influences your prayer life, biblical beliefs, and spiritual growth. Just as muscles develop through regular workouts, spiritual maturity results from consistent engagement and immersion in church. Over time, you’ll find yourself praying, believing, and persevering like those around you.
B. The PEOPLE — The Proof from Scripture
David & Jonathan — Covenant Companionship: 1 Samuel 18:1 — “…the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David…”
God placed Jonathan in David’s life to strengthen his hands in God during a season of intense trial (1 Samuel 23:16). Saul was hunting David, but Jonathan was interceding for David. Every David needs a Jonathan who will say, “God’s with you.”
Paul & Barnabas — Encouraging Companionship: Acts 9:27 — “But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles…”
When everyone feared Paul, Barnabas risked his own reputation to vouch for him. The church had a door, but Barnabas was the key. God sends people to open doors you can’t knock on yourself.
Moses & Aaron — Burden-Bearing Companionship: Exodus 4:14 — “…Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well…”
God provided Aaron as a voice and support when Moses felt inadequate. When your arms get tired, God sends someone to hold them up (Exodus 17:12).
Ruth & Boaz — Providing Companionship: Ruth 2:8 — “…Go not to glean in another field… but abide here fast by my maidens.”
Boaz offered divine protection, provision, and ultimate redemption for Ruth’s future. God sent a protector to a widow in a field. He still does that today.
Jeremiah & Baruch — Partnering Companionship: Jeremiah 36:4 — “…and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD…”
God provided a faithful secretary to preserve the vision when Jeremiah was restricted. Every visionary needs a Baruch to write it down and carry it when they can’t.
C. The PRESENT — The Proof Today
A Godly Spouse (e.g., Celeste): Proverbs 18:22 — “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing…” A spouse who prays with you, corrects you in love, and pushes you to church is God’s blessing walking in your house.
A Spiritual Mentor (e.g., Pastor Selva): 1 Corinthians 4:15 — “For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers…” A mentor sees blind spots you can’t see. They’ve walked the road ahead and can warn you about potholes.
A Faithful Church Family: Galatians 6:2 — “Bear ye one another’s burdens…” The believer who brings you food when you’re sick, watches your kids, or gives you a ride up the mountain to church. That’s God with shoes on.
An Accountability Partner: Proverbs 27:6 — “Faithful are the wounds of a friend…” The friend who texts you Sunday morning: “Where you at?” The one who says “Delete that app” before it destroys you.
God’s greatest earthly blessings usually come walking into your life wearing shoes.
II. PERILOUS COMPANIONS — Satan Walks Against You Through Foolish People
Proverbs 13:20b — “…but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
Just as God uses godly relationships to construct your life, the enemy uses ungodly associations to deconstruct it. Satan frequently disguises himself not as a roaring lion, but as an attractive or convenient relationship.
A. The PRINCIPLE — The Premise
Satan’s Method of Destruction: When the devil wants to disrupt your walk with Christ, he introduces a person into your life to pull you off track. He couldn’t get Jesus in the wilderness, so he used Peter (Matthew 16:23). He couldn’t get David with Goliath, so he used Bathsheba.
The Price of Association: Foolishness is corrupting. If you link arm-in-arm with spiritual fools, you will share in their eventual destruction.
You don’t have to drink to become an alcoholic. Just sit at the bar long enough. You don’t have to fall into sin. Just follow the wrong accounts long enough.
B. The PEOPLE — The Proof from Scripture
Solomon & Pharaoh’s Daughter — Compromising Alliances: 1 Kings 11:1, 4 — “…his wives turned away his heart after other gods…”
Unholy relationships eroded the wisdom of the wisest man alive. He started building temples for idols.
Jehoshaphat & Ahab — Fatal Partnerships: 2 Chronicles 18:1, 31 — “…and joined affinity with Ahab…” A godly king almost lost his life because he partnered with an ungodly ruler in business and battle. Wrong partnerships put you in wrong battles.
The Sower & The Tares — Confusing Counterfeits: Matthew 13:39 — “The enemy that sowed them is the devil…” The enemy plants counterfeit companions directly in the field to choke out fruitfulness. Not every person in your church, job, or communities was sent by God.
Paul & Alexander — Opposing Adversaries: 2 Timothy 4:14 — “Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil…” Some people exist solely to oppose God’s work and inflict emotional harm. They talk about you, slander you, and try to stop the gospel.
Daniel & The Persian Presidents — Pitfalls of Envy: Daniel 6:4 — “…presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel…”
Daniel’s excellence made enemies. When you walk with God, jealous people will try to trap you.
Jesus & Judas — Betrayal from Within: Luke 22:3 — “Then entered Satan into Judas…” The worst wounds come from the inner circle. Judas walked 3 years with Jesus but walked out with 30 pieces of silver.
C. The PRESENT — The Proof Today
The Mocking Acquaintance: Psalm 1:1 — “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly…” The classmate who says “You’re too holy” or “God doesn’t care about that.”
The Unequally Yoked Relationship: 2 Corinthians 6:14 — “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers…” Dating someone who doesn’t love Jesus means you’re heading to 2 different destinations.
The Gossiping Associate: Proverbs 16:28 — “A froward man soweth strife…” The co-worker who pulls you into office politics and backbiting.
The Digital Influence: That influencer who makes sin look fun, makes church look boring, and makes compromise look smart. You watch them 2 hours a day. Who do you think you’ll become? If you walk with fools, you don’t just risk making foolish choices—you guarantee a destructive destination.
III. PERSONAL COMMITMENT — You Must Make a Choice on Who You Walk With
Amos 3:3 — “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
You cannot control every person who crosses your path, but you have full authority over who you pull into your inner circle. Alignment dictates direction.
A. The PRINCIPLE — The Premise
The Responsibility of Choice: You do not choose where you start, but you choose who walks beside you—and who walks beside you dictates where you finish. A plane cannot land in Singapore if it’s flying with a pilot headed for Fiji.
The Power of Agreement: Walking together requires shared values, spiritual alignment, and common destination. Philippians 2:2 — “Be likeminded, having the same love.”
B. The PROBING — Self-Examination
Ask Divine Questions:
- “Lord, did You plant this relationship to produce fruit, or did the enemy plant it to produce damage?” (John 15:2)
- “Is this person drawing me closer to the altar, or pushing me closer to the world?”
Evaluate the Trajectory:
- Proverbs 22:24–25 — “Make no friendship with an angry man… Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.”
You become like the 5 people you spend the most time with. Check your call log.
C. The PRACTICE — Spiritual Action Steps
Disconnect from Darkness: Ephesians 5:11 — “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Unfollow, block, set boundaries. Love them, but don’t let them lead you.
Determine Your Direction:
- Get Planted: Commit deeply to a Bible-believing local church. (Psalm 92:13)
- Get Accountable: Surround yourself with believers who love God enough to speak truth into your life.
- Get Wise Alignment: Psalm 119:63 — “I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.”
Join a small group. Find your Jonathan. Find your Barnabas.
You cannot run a heavenly race while tied to earthly weights. Who you walk with determines where you walk!
CONCLUSION:
Proverbs 13:20 — “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
Your future destination isn’t determined solely by your good intentions—it is shaped by the company backing those intentions.
- Are the people in your inner circle pulling you closer to Jesus?
- Or are they dragging you further away from His presence?
“Show me your friends today, and I will show you your trajectory tomorrow.”
“Let us stand on our feet today, and God wants to realign our walk.”
A. PRAYER FOR SEPARATION & CUTTING CORDS – “Pray right now that God will give you the strength to set holy boundaries, block the wrong influences, and sever ungodly spiritual ties.
B. PRAYER FOR GODLY COMPANIONS & MENTORS – “Ask God to bring a Barnabas into your life, a Jonathan into your battle, and godly friends into the lives of our children and youth.”
C. PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT – “Lord, give me eyes to see who was sent by You and who was sent by the enemy to derail my destiny.”
