We enjoy singing the hymn “๐–‚๐–๐–†๐–™ ๐–† ๐–‹๐–—๐–Ž๐–Š๐–“๐–‰ ๐–œ๐–Š ๐–๐–†๐–›๐–Š ๐–Ž๐–“ ๐•ต๐–Š๐–˜๐–š๐–˜,” which highlights the special privilege of being Jesus’s friend. Just as Abraham believed in God and became Jesus’s friend, we also can develop a friendship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Today’s devotion emphasizes the benefits of being a friend of Jesus.

I have a friend who doesn’t believe, yet whenever I call him, he always answers or returns my call. He understands that when I reach out, I need him. Itโ€™s a great comfort to have a friend like that. Essentially, the value of a friend can be summed up as being “dependable.” If even an unbelieving friend can be reliable, how much more so is the Lord Jesus Christ? In our passage, the Bible states that He laid down His life, demonstrating His willingness to provide our needs. Our most important need is salvation, and Jesus Christ died to offer us the free gift of salvation.

Being a friend of Jesus means we understand what is happening around us; it also requires us to act according to His commands if we are truly His friends. The Bible states, “Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”John 15:15 KJV. This highlights the tremendous privilege of being called a friend rather than a servant. Through reading the Bible and hearing God’s Holy Word preached, we can come to know the Father who has revealed Himself to us.

Being a friend of Christ involves consistently showing love. The Bible states, “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17 KJV). God has granted us eternal love, Amen. Although humans may sometimes fail to express love, God’s love remains unwavering. He is unchangingโ€”yesterday, today, and forever. The Lord has demonstrated His love for you; it is not driven by emotion but by His character as a Loving God. God’s genuine love is shown through giving His Son to die for us on Calvary’s cross. This is a powerful reminder that Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

Do you believe that having Christ as your friend means you can depend on Him, rely on Him, and trust that He will never abandon you? I thank God because when I believed in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, He became my friend. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let us honor and glorify God by obeying His will and commandments. One way to show we are His disciples is to love one another. His desire for us is that we express our gratitude and praise for His honour and glory! Are you a friend of Jesus?
