This devotion helps us understand the true source of Living Water, and how the Lord Jesus Christ continues to extend His invitation to the thirsty and weary soul.

Title: Jesus the Living Water
John 7:37-39 KJV
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

I recall a conversation with the late Pastor Selva, who mentioned that some church members were displeased with the invitation. For instance, after his sermons, he usually invited individuals to come to Christ with a sincere heart and seek forgiveness for their sins.

The contention was this: they began to accuse the pastor of putting those people in the spotlight and attempting to shame them. In the Bible, we consistently find many invitations, and in our text, Christ gives an invitation here.

During the first seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles, the priest and the people gathered at dawn, joyfully processing with a golden pitcher to the Pool of Siloam. At the pool, they filled the pitcher with two pints of water before returning to the Temple. The people marched with palm and willow branches. They entered the Temple area at the Water Gate and quoted Isaiah 12:3, saying, “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.”

The water was poured out on the west side of the brazen altar as the Temple choir sang Psalms 113-118. They waved the palm branches at the end of the song. This ceremony served as a reminder of God’s provision of water from the smitten rock in the wilderness, and expressed gratitude for the rains.

On the eighth day of the feast, they circled the brazen altar seven times to commemorate their victory at Jericho. It is thought that during this time, when the people were hot and thirsty from the march and water was being poured out, the Lord Jesus Christ spoke up. John 7:37-38 says, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

That invitation is extended by the Lord Jesus Christ, the only One who can quench humanity’s thirst. He alone can satisfy man’s deep longing. Jesus said, “Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” The belly craves and desires satisfaction, yet it is never satisfied permanently. Jesus says, “Drink of Me and you will be satisfied.” As water is essential to our lives, the Lord Jesus Christ states that we must make Him part of our existence if we wish to truly live.

Today, Jesus extends an invitation to those who have yet to taste the Living Water: come to Him, accept Him as your personal Saviour, and experience true satisfaction for your soul. For those of you who have already come to Jesus and received Him as your personal Saviour, as you are filled with the Spirit, you become an overflowing river capable of satisfying and blessing the lives of others.
